California Barber License Renewal FAQs: What Barbers Should Know

Barbering license renewal isn't necessarily confusing by nature, but when you take into account that every state has different rules, timelines, and compliance, it can be tough to tell what your rules are in your area.

How Do I Renew My California Barber License?

The easiest and fastest way to renew your California barber license is online through the state's BreEZe licensing system.

Once your license is linked to your account, you'll see a renewal option when your license is within 60 days of expiration.

Simply complete the renewal application, pay the required fee (we'll talk more about this later), and submit your renewal.

In most cases, online renewals are processed immediately unless you have outstanding fines or other issues that need to be resolved first – then, you'll have to handle those before you can renew your license.

When Do I Renew My California Barber License?

California asks (and allows) barbers to renew their licenses before the expiration date (more on that in a second) – your online renewal option becomes available within 60 days of expiration.

Our advice? It's best not to wait until the last minute. Renewing early helps ensure your license remains active and prevents any interruption to your ability to legally practice barbering. Also, while the renewal process should be (and often is) fast, if you tackle things early, you won't be caught waiting if you end up dealing with a bit of the slow wheels of government or governmental red tape, so to speak.

How Often Do I Need to Renew My California Barber License?

California barber licenses must be renewed every two years to remain active and in good standing. If you fail to renew before your expiration date, your license will become what they call "delinquent" until renewal requirements are completed.

In other words, if you're practicing without a properly renewed license (AKA with a delinquent license), you're practicing illegally and could face fines or other punishment.

Once I Renew, How Long Does it Take for the Renewal to Take Effect?

If you're wondering if the renewal is immediate or if there is a review process, the answer is that it depends.

For online renewals submitted through BreEZe, the renewal is typically effective immediately after the transaction is completed and the fee is paid. The exception tends to pop up if you have unpaid fines or unresolved issues that have to be addressed and resolved before the renewal can be finalized.

When Does My Physical License Card Arrive After Renewing?

If you renew online through BreEZe, you can generally expect to receive your new license within about seven business days. Mail-in renewals (which you can do but aren't as fast) typically take longer to process and deliver back to you – just keep that in mind for timeline purposes.

Are There Fees or Costs Associated With Renewing?

There sure are. Just like most states, California charges a renewal fee for all barber licenses. At the time of this blog's publishing, the renewal fee is $50 for an individual barber license.

But it's important to know that if your license has already expired, it's possible that additional delinquency fees may apply for missing the deadline. Because state fees can change, it's always a good idea to verify the current amount before submitting your renewal.

Does California Have Continuing Education Requirements for License Renewals?

At the time of publishing this blog, no. Unlike many other states, California does not currently require barbers like you to complete continuing education hours in order to renew their licenses.

While we wholeheartedly agree that continuing education can help you stay competitive and sharpen your skills, it is not a renewal requirement at this time and is totally up to you.

What Happens if I Miss the Renewal Deadline?

If you miss your renewal deadline, your license will become delinquent. While delinquent, you are no longer considered current and should not practice barbering until your license is renewed.

The good news is that California allows expired licenses to be renewed for up to five years after the expiration date, provided all required fees are paid.

Are There Late Fees I Have to Pay if I miss the Renewal Deadline?

Let's pretend that you accidentally let your license expire without renewing it. In other words, you missed the renewal deadline.

If your license expires, you'll generally need to pay both the regular renewal fee and a delinquency fee to bring your license back into good standing. For California barber licenses, the delinquency fee is currently $25 in addition to the standard renewal fee of $50  so, $75 total for a late renewal (at the time of this writing).

What are the Barbering License Requirements if I'm Moving From Out of State To California

The good news is that California offers licensure through reciprocity for many out-of-state barbers. But you need to know if you qualify before you just assume this applies to you.

To qualify, you'll typically need a current license that is active, unrestricted, and in good standing in another state. You'll also need to submit a Reciprocity Application, pay the required fees, and have your licensing state send certification of your license directly to the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

Once your application is approved by the state, you'll receive instructions for completing the final licensing process and obtaining your California barber license. If your current license was originally obtained through reciprocity, California may also require certification from the state where you were first licensed.

Can I Get a Temporary License While I Wait for My Renewal?

You can't, but this also shouldn't be necessary. California does not issue temporary barber licenses while a renewal is being processed, but in most cases, your renewal should be immediate.

The exception is when you have fees or delinquency hoops to jump through – only when those are resolved will they renew their license. And not to pester, but this is one reason why renewing early is so important if you want to avoid any interruption in your ability to work.

Does Your Barbering Liability Insurance Need Renewal, Too?

While we have you here and while we're on the subject of renewing things, we want to point one thing out – if it's time to renew your California barbering license, it might be worth checking in on your barbering liability insurance, too.

Don't get us wrong – we know that license renewal and liability insurance renewal aren't the same thing. In fact, your insurance renewal is something you likely have to think about every year, but we figured, hey, you're here, and we're talking renewal, might as well drop you a line about barbering liability insurance from National Barbers Insurance.

Remember, coverage isn't a "nice to have" – it's a must for barbers who want to operate legally, intelligently, and safely. Not all barbering insurance is created equal, either.
